In 1984 Dick Johnson envisioned the Ford Mustang GT as a car that could be competitive under the new Group A racing rules, scheduled for 1985. He tracked down two cars in Germany and took them back to his Queensland workshop for rebuilding and race preparation. The 1986 Bathurst practice sessions were wet and caused a few dramas for the drivers, but as the track dried, Alan Grice put down a fantastic time to be almost 2s faster than anyone else. In a contested Hardies Heros Top Ten Shootout, the Skyline driven by Gary Scott secured Pole from Grice, with Johnson a further 2.6s behind in 6th position.
